Story of SurvivalMarion Blumenthal Lazan has shared her story since 1979. The students Lazan speaks to across the country are the last generation to share her story with their friends, family and even their children. "The Holocaust did happen," Lazan said. According to her autobiography on the Four Perfect Pebbles website, Lazan states, "I stress the need for love, respect and tolerance for one another, regardless of religious belief, color of the skin, race or national origin. Life for me today is rich, full and rewarding, especially when speaking to and with young adults." |
Students in the Freshman English classes attended a speech by Marion Blumenthal Lazan at Augusta High School on Sept 14. Lazan is the author of "Four Perfect Pebbles," her memoir of surviving the Holocaust. Her story, which brought some to tears, captivated all in attendance. Lazan's family–mother, father, and brother, Albert, found themselves unable to leave Germany once the invasion started. Her game as a child, was to collect four perfect pebbles, one to represent each family member, which meant her family would survive. All four survived through the liberation, but her father later passed due to typhus. Lazan shared one constant struggle she faced was an overwhelming sense of fear; however, her faith is what kept her strong. Her mother, who lived to the age of 104, also remained a fighting force in keeping her children fed and safe, even in the most deplorable conditions. Marion was taken by cattle cars full of hundreds of Jews, to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Her fear grew even more because she never knew what was going to happen next. When she was allowed to shower, she never knew whether water or gas would spray out of the nozzle. Three years after the liberation by the Russian Army, Marion came to the Peoria, IL. Marion still looks in awe at the Statue of Liberty because that symbol gives her a feeling of freedom, considering what she overcame to survive the journey to the United States.
