FFA attended a Landon Series lecture by Temple Grandin in Manhattan on Nov 29. Students Dieter Masters,
Garrett Korte, Ethan Elliot, Tennesse Thrush, Allison Burch and Gricelda Gracia attended with sponsors Kasie Kieffer and Amie Oltman. Temple Grandin is an "American professor of animal science at Colorado State University, world-renowned autism spokesperson and consultant to the livestock industry on animal behavior," according to Wikipedia. Grandin, who has authored several books on autism and animal behavior, talked about the human mind. According to Oltman, Grandin talked about how some people's learning is different from others, but we can all be utilized in the world we live in. "She talked about people's different learning styles," senior Dieter Masters said. Not only does this impact learning, but also behavior. "I went because I teach Special Education and I like the brain research of Autism that she spoke about," Oltman said. Grandin designed the cattle squeeze chute and stated that she created the systems for chutes that cattle go through and over 1/2 the cattle that in North America has gone through a chute that she has designed. Grandin has been hired by Tyson, McDonalds, and Cargill to make sure their meat production improves by reducing stress on the cattle to decrease cattle loss. Kieffer attended to hear the Ag information about Grandin's designs in order to share the knowledge within her Ag program. |
